The design of the bags was born out of a legendary plane journey in 1983 when style icon Jane Birkin spilt the contents of her straw tote in front of Jean-Louis Dumas, who was a chief executive of Hermès at the time; he asked her to collaborate with Hermès to create a bag that was both stylish and practical.
