The graceful lotus flower usually grows in water and has strong spiritual and religious associations in Buddhism and Hinduism. It was also important in Ancient Egyptian religion, where scholars believe it was associated with rebirth, since lotus flowers appear to sink into the water at night and rise again in the morning. In Hinduism, the flower is associated with peace and purity, as it pushes up from the mud to bloom above the water and lotus blossoms are often depicted under the feet of various deities such as Lakshmi and Ganesha. The flower also has the meaning of ‘eloquence’ in Victorian flower language.
