£4,000.00

This poignant piece represents the time-difference between New York and London and was created in response to 9/11. It features two pocket-watches, one on BST for London and one on EST for New York, with the time preserved forever in the clear resin sculpture.

This piece is about time in lots of different ways. It’s about the tension and compression of time as well as the simultaneous lives being lived in different time zones. Artist Debra Franses also wanted to mark 9/11 and the moment when time stopped – everyone knows exactly where they were when they heard the news. Debra herself was in a quarry on the Isle of Portland when her father called her from England to tell her that 9/11 had happened and how traumatic he was finding it. Although Debra didn’t lose anyone directly connected to herself in the event, she felt seismic shift in her life at that point; that was the moment that she really understood the brevity of our lives and she instantly decided to quit her office job and go to art school instead, so she wanted to commemorate that in a piece.
